Treat Your Business Like A Business-Not A Hobby

"Treat your business like a business and it will pay you like one… treat your business like a hobby and it will pay you like one."

If you’re looking to build a successful business, then you have to start treating it like one… right NOW!  Most people think they will once it’s starts paying them like one, but I have news for you… if you don’t do it now it won’t ever develop into one.

Most network/multi-level, and affiliate marketers don’t look at their business as a ‘real’ business.  I think that’s where the disconnect comes in.  How could you expect others to want to join you in business if you don’t look at your business as a real business?

Most network marketers don’t look at their business as a ‘real’ business.  I think that’s where the disconnect comes in.  How could you expect others to want to join you in business if you don’t look at your business as a real business?
So what are some things you can do to treat your business like a real business?
Commit:
Running a business is not something you can have a casual or lax attitude about. It's not something you work on in your spare time when inspiration hits. You need to be completely committed to your business and focused on driving its success.
I know what you're thinking: "But, what if I'm just starting out and need to split my time between my business and my day job?" I totally understand. But, while you may be working on your business in the evenings and on weekends, you need to do more than just dabble in it. It may be your side hustle, but it should be more than a side project.
Set goals:
The purpose of a business is very different than the purpose of a hobby. Your hobbies you do for fun and only fun. But, your business, while you may enjoy the work, has a goal. You have a vision and ambition, and you want to grow.
If you want your business to last, you can't just go with the flow. You need to have a strategy for where your business will go and how you will get there. What are you trying to accomplish? If it's making a living, what will you do to bring in revenue? How will your process work?

Know your value:
Successful entrepreneurs know what they're good at -- and what they aren't. Sometimes what you love doing and what you're good at are two very different things. If you aren't good at something, there's no way to turn it into a business. I enjoy singing, but nobody is going to pay me money to do it.
Similarly, there has to be a need for what you do. I like playing video games, but that's not a viable business option.
Productive Hours:
Would you agree that successful business has productive business hours?  If you don’t know what times you’re working, then how do you expect to work?  Most marketers work when they feel like it… or when they find the time to squeeze it in.
You’re not going to build a business that will pay you for the rest of your life by just doing it when you feel like it… or whenever you have a free moment to squeeze it in.  You need to create some structure.
It doesn’t matter if you’re able to put 5 hours per week or 30 hours per week towards your business.  Whatever the amount of time is that you can allocate towards building your business, schedule it.

When I say schedule it, I mean put it on your calendar and block out that time.  If the time is not schedule something else will come up that will get in the way.  This will take a bit of discipline, but it will pay off big time in the end for you.

Tracking Results:
If we want to be productive and effective, we need to know what’s working and what’s not working.  The only way we can do that is by tracking our results.  Make sense?
Let’s say you’re on a diet and workout plan to get into better physical shape.  Would you know it’s working by looking in the mirror?  Well, that’s exactly what tracking your business results is like.  Being able to look at your results is just like looking in the mirror.
If you’re tracking your results daily, weekly and monthly… then you’ll be able to see exactly what’s working as well as where you need to make some adjustments.  This is probably one of the most important things you can do as a business owner… and most networkers don’t do it.
You should be tracking things like how many phone calls did you make, how many appointments did you set, how many presentations did you do, how many enrollments did you get, etc.
Let’s say a month went by in your business and you didn’t personally enroll anyone.  If you’ve been tracking your actions then you’ll know where the issue is.  You’ll be able to ‘look in the mirror’ and see that you didn’t make enough phone calls to make appointments to show presentations.
Sometimes network marketers don’t want to track their actions because they’re afraid to see the results.  If this is the case then you should just close up shop now.

Focus on profit
The main difference between a business and a hobby? Money. Cashflow. Revenue. Profits! If you don't have customers, you don't have a business. You have a hobby.
If you're just starting out, you may not have a steady income yet, but that should be your goal. Your business isn't really a business until you're making a profit. To ensure longevity, your business should be something you can make money from for a long time.
To be successful, you need to find that intersection of what you're good at, what you love and what people need. When you can check all three boxes, that's when you know you've struck gold.
